SEER stands for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.” The formula is cooling power in BTUs divided by energy used in watt-hours. All you need to know is that a higher SEER is better. The minimum has been 14 SEER since 2015.
Heat pumps are measured in HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) and furnaces have an AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). Higher is better for all of these.
